Sundborn, Sweden, 15 September 1942
My dearest Bertie,
It’s now autumn here with a tang of winter already in the air and leaves falling everywhere – after a fairly cold and wet summer. In about four weeks I’ll be moving to a small 2-room cottage right down on the lake – as it has electric light, double windows, and isn’t the dark ice-house this one is except in summer....
Some of the British-Finland Volunteers of the last Finnish war either debunked on their own from their internment camp here – or else went off with official sanction (I don’t know which), but anyway, got caught by the Nazis and are now in Germany as prisoners of war. I’d a post card from one of them – very depressed. Since last May, we’ve about a half-dozen R.A.F. officers in the Polish internment camp quite near here. Their planes crash in Lappland after they’ve been flying over Norway … I always have them out here to dinner, which means saving the rations of one month and blowing them in one glorious burst! They (the officers) are all very young, the oldest about 30, and have the most amazing high spirits.… Two Australians, one Canadian, two Poles – and the rest English....
