Fall of Brussels!
German troops march through the capital.
Great Germany victory at Metz!
Saturday 22nd August 1914
10,000 French prisoners, 50 guns and 8 French Army corps defeated at Metz. Firing-line is said to have stretched 140 kilometres.
Belgian troops are falling back on Antwerp.
Attempted assassination of the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria.
Went for a short walk with C this morning. It was glorious and C told me that she loved me as a sweetheart. We discussed Diplomatic Life. She says very little—but I feel happier than ever before.
