desert them at the last moment and side with the Russians—of all people—and the French. They can understand France’s policy, referring to the 1870 war, and then [sic] can understand Russia’s policy, referring to the hatred that has so lately existed between her (R.) and Austria—but they say that they cannot understand England’s policy—they see no direct reason for the hatred for Germany which England has shown by her declaration of war on Germany.
While I was locked up in Prison, thinking of the pleasant visit which I was about to pay on one of the German fortresses, I constantly took out a little photograph of C. which I had in my pocket-book. I thanked God, that I had this at least to rely on as a friend, and it was then that I knew how I loved her.
