Cartoonist and political commentator J.W. Bengough, dubbed Sheppard "The Journalistic Cowboy"in this cartoon - a reference to the early years Sheppard reportedly spent as a cowboy in the U.S. and Mexico (Sheppard continued to wear string ties and other cowboy attire) and an allusion to his unbridled support of American republicanism and independence for Canada.
