Dearest Bertie,
I write just as the partial mobilisation in Sweden is announced. Today the New York Herald-Tribune (is it important?) says of Russia’s threat to the Lapland iron-ore exactly what I wrote to the press a month ago. Even I did not expect the threat to come so soon. In the last two months how the whole world has changed!
You can imagine how I feel: knowing most of the ground that is likely to be fought over – if it comes to that. All week I’ve been getting people to write to the press on Finland, etc. ...
It is hateful to me to sit behind England’s armed might, Maginot lines, etc. while the Finns are burning their houses, sinking their ships, giving their lives, their women, their children.… You know what they say about the Finns: –
