It is reported that Japan has declared war on Germany.
Played cards with C—and then talked to her about England and London.
Her terrible silence unnerves me sometimes—but girls are girls—and it is almost impossible to understand them altogether.
August 20th 1914 Thursday
Death of the Pope!
Declaration of war by Japan on Germany.
News of the fall of Tirlemont (1 hour from Brussels). 500 Belgian prisoners, 3 guns and 3 machine-guns. British submarine sunk by a German cruiser.
Charlotte wrote me a note, but tore it up. I was terribly disappointed.
