You see, up to now I have been quite aware that I was just exploring the new sphere and working working working, anything to try and understand what went on, and the result is records of interest in events and things, but after our committee review at the end of our first six months of work from which work was selected for the National Gallery Show, I knew that I had not accomplished what I wanted to do, or knew I should do. I went to Epping Forest to think and I saw a complete painting which expressed more than my own feelings about this 1943 and I was sure of what I had to do.
With permission I went to a bomber station for a week to study at night the details of my conception and although this extraordinary week would be worth writing at some length I'm afraid it is not permissible -- It must suffice to say everything that occurred belonged to the uncommenced painting and verified it and intensified its feeling and I returned to London hardly putting pencil to paper but it was indelibly impressed.
