Gert arrived at 11:0 p.m. with the two dogs. He had been standing 14 hours in a dog’s compartment and was to be in Berlin at 7:0 o’clock, but the train was 4 hours late. On his journey he saw two or three executions of spies caught on the railway-stations. No passenger was allowed to put his head out of the window for fear of being shot at. Gert had been ordered to join his regiment in Mainz. It was nice seeing him again—he is such a boy—so frank, so gay.
He and I went out into the town and visited the cafés. He thinks that things look very serious but does not believe in the possibilities of a war.
We returned very late.
Said good-night to dear little C.—but for her, I would be utterly miserable about the uncertainty of the state of affairs.
