When we arrived at the Zoological gardens Station we noticed crowds of excited people snatching at newspapers. On buying one, I read that Austria had declared war on Servia—things look very serious now—for Russia will certainly defend Servia’s interests. As far as I can see, the Austrian diplomatists have made a great mistake by not avoiding this declaration of war—for if Russia defends Austria’s interests, it will mean a European war—a war too terrible to be imagined.
I do hope things will blow over.
Kathleen forgot one of her trunks, so I had to return to the Station and fetch it.
Talked with C. for some time about her fiancé Jack—I wonder if she is really in love with him—I suppose she must
