An hour later he had left for Saarburg on the Franco-German frontier.
Had a long talk this evening with C. I have quite lost my heart to her, and do hope to be successful. I used to think of her by night and by day, when I was in Hannover, and now I see her night and day. I consider myself a lucky fellow.

I shall never forget this day and the days to follow, as long as I live.
The war news was now really serious. Russia had mobilized and was marching her troops into East Prussia. Dorothy who is rather nervous got excited this evening and begged me to take her to the British Embassy. I did so, and consequently disturbed Thomas, one of the attachés in the middle of dinner.
