public, the more I was convinced that England’s policy would be neutral undoubtedly.
However Dorothy became very nervous and as she was rather ill already, we thought it would be better for her to return to England. I volunteered to accompany her, as I was as eager to leave as she was, and I had soon packed my bag. I am sorry to confess that I almost shirked leaving when I thought of separating from darling C, but I forgot myself and thought of others.
Mother however wanted me to stay in Berlin for a few days, till it should be really necessary to leave, as she hated the idea of being in Germany and in Berlin, without a man in the family.
